Why is there such a stigma about drug addiction over other addictions? Individuals have all sorts of addictions including food addiction, alcohol addiction, sex addiction, tobacco addiction, gambling addiction, gaming addiction just to name a few. These issues and how they impact individuals lives should be more openly discussed in public or the media. These addictions should be discussed in society just like other chronic long-term illnesses like high blood pressure and diabetes. The subject of drug addiction should not be taboo and people with this illness should be given the same compassion, care and understanding as given to individuals with other long-term illnesses.
Another point is that individuals working in the field of addiction are also stigmatized. For example, when I explain to friends and people I meet what I do and that I work in the field of addiction, others automatically feel uncomfortable and look at me strangely while they try to change the conversation.
From my point of view, the main reason for the stigma is a lack of knowledge about the science and facts surrounding addiction. With knowledge there is understanding and compassion.
I wish more was done by Federal and State institutions to fight the stigma of drug addiction. I came across a great organization trying to fight that stigma. It is called Stop Stigma Now. Go and check their website. It is very instructive.
